Representatives from local government, local community organisations, and interested residents met recently to discuss transport infrastructure needs within Beaudesert Shire and to form the Beaudesert Shire Community Transport Network action group.

The group discussed the critical lack of public transport connecting the Shire's townships and villages and the need for reliable and regular transport links with major centres outside of the Shire.

Labor candidate for the State seat of Beaudesert, Mr Brett Raguse, attended the meeting and said that the issues raised by the group needed to be addressed.

"I attended the recent meeting of the Beaudesert Shire Community Transport Network and it was obvious to me that local residents are ill-served by the current transport options available in the Shire.

"Residents have to put up with a complete lack of action on this issue by State and Federal representatives for far too long. It's time for positive, pro-active action to address the transport problems in the area," he said.

The action group discussed ways to address public transport needs and to develop revenue-neutral transport options.

"The solutions which they discussed to service the intra-nodal links between the townships and villages, and inter-nodal links to other major centres are very practical," Mr Raguse said.

"I think that one of the solutions discussed, involving the scheduling of buses between Beaudesert and Browns Plains has merit.

"Instead of the bus travelling all the way into Brisbane CBD as it does now, it could travel to Browns Plains and link up with regular Brisbane City Council services. This would enable the service provider to offer more daily services from Beaudesert and provide more flexibility for the residents," he said.

The Beaudesert Shire Community Transport Network proposes to formulate a transport strategy and to lobby State, Federal and Local Government with respect to the local transport problem.

"It's all about local representation. If the Government is made aware of the problem and offered solutions, then things will begin to happen. The Beaudesert Shire Community Transport Network has taken the first step. Before we know it, solutions will be implemented."
